| STEWART
KERSHAW was born in Oxford, sang as a chorister in Chichester Cathedral,
and studied at London's Royal Academy of Music where he was awarded several
prizes in conducting. A French Government Scholarship allowed him further
studies at the Paris Conservatoire under Manuel Rosenthal, in Venice with
Franco Ferrara, and at the Tanglewood Summer Festival under Erich Leinsdorf. |
He
has held permanent posts at London's Royal Opera House, the Paris and Lyon
Opera Houses in France, the Munich and Stuttgart Opera Houses in Germany,
the Kyoto Symphony in Japan, the Evansville Philharmonic in the U.S.A as
well as the Houston Ballet. He is currently Music Director for the Pacific
Northwest Ballet in Seattle and also the Auburn Symphony Orchestra which
he leads in a series of concerts every year. |
The
Royal Academy in London made him an honorary Fellow in 1988 for his services
to music around the world. As of 1999 he has conducted more than 75 orchestras
in 23 countries. His languages are English, French and German. |
A
Compact Disc of French organ music with the Auburn Symphony was released
on the Ambassador Label in 1997 and which received the following reviews: |
|
| FANFARE
MAGAZINE |
| "splendid
and vibrant performance that compares well with the Tracy/BBC Philharmonic/Tortelier.
In fact the Auburn ensemble's reading of the beautiful Pastorale movement
is even more expressive than the Chandos version". |
| AMERICAN
RECORD GUIDE |
| "the
orchestra has a wonderful sound" |
| "good
intonation and sensitive musicianship" |
| "the
orchestra sounds splendid, with outstanding solo passages" |
| "the
brass group is excellent, the intonation impeccable" |
| "this
orchestra definitely deserves an album all its own. Kershaw's direction
and control are those of a seasoned professional" |
| SEATTLE
TIMES |
| "a
disc of particular interest" |
| "the
Auburn Symphony already sounds like a seasoned ensemble that plays with
bold confidence" |
SEATTLE
WEEKLY |
| "Kershaw
leads a brilliantly idiomatic performance, the ASO's strings tight as a
drum" |
| "rounding
out this eclectic disc are two speaker testers... |
| "The
new Auburn Symphony, under the baton of Stewart Kershaw, whose new compact
disc shows it's already a symphony of distinction." |
|
Mr.
Kershaw was in London in May 1999 with the BBC Concert Orchestra recording
the complete Incidental Music to A Midsummer Night's Dream as well as other
Mendelssohn works for the BBC HDTV film to be released later this year.
It is hoped that a 2 CD Set of this music will also be made available at
the same time as the film. |
| This
conductor enjoys an extremely large repertoire that covers the entire symphonic
repertoire as well as that of the ballet world. |
| Although
this conductor is contractually engaged during the season at the Seattle
Opera House and with the Auburn Symphony Orchestra, he is nevertheless
available for several months every year to guest conduct with any symphony
orchestra or ballet company that might need his services. |
